Why a Flat Smells and the Nose Stops Noticing
Olfactory adaptation makes a resident insensitive to their own home's smell within minutes, which is why the sources have to be managed by rule rather than by detection.

A flat can smell without its occupant being aware of it. The mechanism is a normal property of the sense of smell, and it means the problem cannot be managed by noticing.
The nose adapts to constant input
Smell receptors respond strongly to change and weakly to a steady signal. A constant odour therefore fades from perception within minutes of exposure.
This is useful, since it lets attention shift to new smells that might matter, but it means a resident is the least reliable judge of their own home.
Returning after a few hours away restores sensitivity briefly, which is why a flat smells noticeable on entry and unremarkable ten minutes later.
The sources are few and predictable
Food waste is the strongest and fastest, since decomposition begins within a day and accelerates in a warm kitchen.
Damp fabric is the second: towels, dishcloths and laundry left in the machine all develop a musty smell from bacterial growth.
Drains contribute when a trap dries out, and the smell then appears intermittently, which makes it harder to attribute to a source.
Soft furnishings store what passes through
Fabric absorbs airborne compounds and releases them slowly, so curtains, upholstery and bedding hold the accumulated history of what has happened in the room.
This is why a flat can smell of cooking days later, and why cleaning hard surfaces alone does not resolve it.
Washing or airing textiles addresses the reservoir rather than the current source, and it is the step usually missed.
Masking is not removal
Air fresheners and candles add a smell rather than removing one, and the combination is often worse than the original.
They also remove the signal, since a masked smell no longer prompts anyone to find its source before it worsens.
Ventilation genuinely removes odour by exchanging the air, and it is the only method that works on a source that has not yet been found.
Managing it by rule instead of by nose
Because detection is unreliable, the practical approach is a schedule: food waste out regularly, cloths dried or washed, laundry unloaded promptly.
Running water through unused drains and keeping the bin itself clean, rather than only emptied, cover the two most persistent sources.
Asking a visitor directly is the only accurate test available, and it is worth more than any amount of standing in the hallway trying to smell your own flat.
Questions readers ask
Do I need to wash out recycling?
A rinse is generally enough, and it does not need to be spotless. The aim is to remove residue that would contaminate other material in the same collection.
Why does my bin smell even when it is empty?
Residue and absorbed liquid on the bin surface itself. Wash it with hot soapy water, dry it fully and it usually resolves.
