Routine & Upkeep
Changing Your Address Takes More Than One Form
A postal forwarding request redirects most mail temporarily but updates nobody's records, so accounts, licenses and registrations each need changing at their own source.

Filing a change of address with the Postal Service feels like the moment the move becomes official. It forwards mail for a limited period and tells none of the senders anything, which is where the problems start.
Forwarding is a redirect with an expiry date
The Postal Service intercepts mail addressed to your old address and sends it to the new one for a set period. First-class mail is forwarded for longer than periodicals and marketing mail.
When the period ends, forwarding stops and mail is returned to sender or discarded. Anyone who never updated their records simply loses contact with you.
The service also shares address updates with certain mailers, which is why some catalogs follow you automatically and why unrelated companies suddenly have the new address.
Financial and government records update at the source
Banks, card issuers, insurers, employers and brokerages each hold an address independently, and each needs telling. Statements, replacement cards and tax documents follow the record rather than the forwarding order.
A driver's license or state ID carries its own deadline for reporting a move, and vehicle registration and voter registration are separate updates again. The requirements are set by each state and change over time.
Tax documents arriving in January are the common casualty, because they are mailed once, months after a move, when forwarding may already have lapsed.
Services follow the address rather than the person
Utilities, internet, insurance and subscription deliveries are all tied to a service address rather than a mailing address, and moving usually means closing one account and opening another.
Renters insurance in particular covers a specific location, and a policy that still names the old apartment provides very little at the new one.
Auto insurance is priced partly by garaging address, so a move can change the premium in either direction and failing to report it can affect a claim.
A written list beats remembering
The reliable method is to work through a statement of the last two or three months and note every organization that sent something, since those are precisely the ones that will send again.
Checking the old address for mail after the first month, where that is possible, catches the accounts that were missed while the forwarding is still running.
Doing the whole list within the first few weeks costs an afternoon and avoids the slower version, which is discovering each missed account one late notice at a time.
Questions readers ask
Do I need to wash out recycling?
A rinse is generally enough, and it does not need to be spotless. The aim is to remove residue that would contaminate other material in the same collection.
Why does my bin smell even when it is empty?
Residue and absorbed liquid on the bin surface itself. Wash it with hot soapy water, dry it fully and it usually resolves.
